British Colloquium for Theoretical Computer Science

The British Colloquium for Theoretical Computer Science (BCTCS) is an annual event for UK-based researchers in theoretical computer science. A central aspect of BCTCS is the training of PhD students, providing an environment for students to gain experience in presenting their work, to broaden their outlook on the subject, and to benefit from contact with established researchers.

The next meeting of the BCTCS will be hosted by the University of Bath from 4-5 April 2024.

The most recent meeting of the BCTCS was hosted by the University of Glasgow from 3-4 April 2023.

Sad news (March 2024): This month, we lost Professor Alan Gibbons (1942-2024) who served as the second Chairman of the BCTCS from 1992 to 1998.

Sad news (September 2024): This month, we lost Chris Tofts (1964-2024) who served as the President of the BCTCS from 2001 to 2004, having served as Treasurer for the previous five years. He also organised BCTCS11 (Swansea 1995) and BCTCS18 (HP Labs Bristol 2002).

A floral arrangement has been sent to his widow, with the following sentiment:

Dear Mel,

The Organising Committee of the BCTCS wanted to extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family. We were appalled to hear that the world has lost Chris. It was delightful that he could attend our meeting earlier this year - his dry wit never failed to add joviality to the room - and a bitter irony that his main task was to deliver a eulogy for one of his predecessor as President of BCTCS. He will receive no less of an honour at our next meeting, where his memory will be honoured - and drank to!

With heartfelt condolences,

Barnaby Martin,
On behalf of the BCTCS
